In his architectural practice, Pat Pinder exhibited a no-frills approach to design that was honest and effective. He also mentored teams of emerging architects who established their successful practices. His projects showcased a modernist DNA that was overlaid with the personalities of his young team leaders.
A longstanding interest in architectural education was another focus of his professional life. He was a chapter councillor of the Australian Institute of Architects and served as president of the WA Chapter; an examiner for the Architects Board of Western Australia architectural practice examinations; and an assessor of architecture programs. He also acted as a sessional member of the Building Disputes Tribunal and a senior WA State Administrative Tribunal panel member.
Pinder’s country character, established during his formative years in regional NSW, remained with him throughout his life and was reflected in the diverse interests he pursued in his personal and professional lives. He was an avid rugby player and motorbike racer, and he built and flew large-scale, sophisticated model aircraft. He also played golf, was a keen fisherman and enjoyed family holidays in the bush.
